Whatever happened to JSF? Why did he kill his channel and all his videos? I was actually going to link his lawrence video to a buddy with alot of questions today and then i learned he's just vanished.

I really like listening to Sophie, she speaks her mind clearly and has a lot of interesting ideas concerning the themes of Eldenring. The story has so much potential and the direction the dlc went is... making everything a mess. Especially the timeline. Still, even though it got now very complicated and lot of assumptions of the basegame need to be revaluated, i think there is still an amazing story. Concerning Miquella/St. Trina... I am too fascinated with the fact, that Miquella is now seemingly universally hated by the community, even though it seems clear to me, that he is the hero of the story. Literally sacrificing everything for a better world. That somehow Miyasaki made it so, that the saviour is seen as a monster. And that narrative, i think, made it necessary for so little of Miquellas character to be explored. Because with a deeper look, it would be to obvious that he is nice.

Maliketh says he won't allow the rune of death to be stolen again. I think Melina stole it and her body was destroyed by Maliketh wielding the red flame once the black flame lost its full power

So juvenile question here, but who would win in a fight? Marika or Gwyn? I think its interesting looking at how the powers of each of these beings was manifest in their respective series. Also in your opinion, who is the most powerful being in all the fromsoft souls titles?

I recommend you all look up The Spirit Guarded Cave tale. Blew my freaking mind. The elements of the story definitely influenced BB and Artorias of the Abyss DLC. Essentially some civilization in between numerous warring factions decided to flee ( they thought running and eventually becoming slaves was better than dying ), but before doing so an Elder rose among them and made an important suggestion. Take all their sacred relics somewhere hidden and bury them. The others agreed with this Wiseman's idea and begun the trek to find the perfect place. Eventually they traveled until the spirits around them began to guide them. This was in a magical forest that surrounded Mt Mureau ( I think that's the spelling ). They found a cave which was located in that very sacred mountain. They buried it all and eventually over time the generations to follow that descended from this tribe forgot why they settled around the mountain. Fast forward years later. Words of the tale spread like the plague and many greedy souls, opportunistic thieves and treacherous treasure hunters began to reach this place. The residents clearly took offense and begun to defend themselves. This where some other old legend is intertwined- The Slumbering Hero/Mountain King. Legend has it when these crimes were committed the spirits of the respected dead rose to aid their descendants. Now ain't that sounding familiar? Sounding a lot like Manus/Oolacile and Loran with it's subterranean living spaces which are directly inside the mountain. Manus an Elder had his grave pillaged and became outraged. His descendants would become slaves to Gwyn. And ain't the environment that leads to Manus interesting? It's like we're spelunking an uncharted cave system. Labyrinth Watchers too stand out. Remember the biblical watchers? They're mentioned a bit in that tale. Some scholars theorized these Watchers vowed to protect these Holy Relics. Now ain't that wild? Manus and Pthumerians had to be inspired by this! Hell the Hamlet Massacre reminds me of Limmenkäinen Temple being raided by the Vatican with a splash of Lovecraft's Shadows of Innsmouth. As for Laurence. Suspiciously close to Loran. Which may have been named after Laurentium. Maybe just maybe Laurence was only so adamant on Blood Healing because It's quite possibly "in his blood" or he was raised by a witness or survivor who romanticized the scourge outbreak of Loran. Ragiling the Bastard of Loran about the Moon and the magnificent blood of the Gods Oh one last observation! Been playing a lot lately to cope with the poor job market and to gear up for the Return to Yharnam ( if I live to see it, things are rough atm ). Back to the topic. Those statues in Old Yharnam have chains around them. The reason why is rooted in some old pagan beliefs. The honored dead would have statues made in their images. The people did this with the belief that the spirits would inhabit these statues and one day roam again! Just like how you see caskets and coffins chained up throughout "New" Yharnam. Shame they didn't double down on that idea! Imagine some weeping angels in BB, that'd be nightmare fuel.

QUESTION *Is it possible thr healing church was established only after laurence remains was collected, in the future press interveiw, Michel zaki says laurence's skull served as the start of the church.* The healing church seem to love visualising laurence's death more than when he was a living man. Even in the dlc's grand cathedral you find his human skull below and autopsy sculpture which can be imagined to be laurence's autopsy, they love deifying his death, makes me think they were originally just called byrgenworth scholars to the people when they first came and only later employed the viel of religious organisation to earn the peoples trust and gain power in the city so they could more easily perform their experiments

I heard here for the first time that the Nameless King is the Founder of Lothric. Can maybe someone point me to a video where they discuss this theory in more detail?

It keeps me up at night that the stakes of Marika, and now especially the statues of Marika in the Shadow of the Erdtree, have her posed in the shape of the death rune. Most of her statues have her posed to match her own rune, as she is in the end and in the DLC trailer. What do you suppose that is trying to say?

Always good to hear a smackdown on the reductive 1-for-1 lore discussions which have been floating around recently, making evocative and fascinating art into wiki pages. FromSoft writers are so clearly invested in gender and sexuality and relationships it’s ridiculous to pretend otherwise!

The one example of a character 'lying' to you is Ymir from the DLC I think. He's interesting to parse because his most groundbreaking claims have a direct conflict of interest with his own goals. He's not a reliable narrator in my opinion and that makes him a very divisive presence in the lore.

Oh wow this is the first time i actually see the NPC fight with this many of them present. All that dialogue is eh..incredibly bad lol Ive heard people describe it as the best boss fight and even as the best fromsoft encounter. Call me baffled

A few counterpoints from someone who really loved the dlc. 1. I think Godwyn wasn’t mentioned because in the base game his soul was killed (the one thing Miquella needed to bring him to the realm of shadow) and the eclipse ritual failed, so he moved onto the next option Radahn (although yes it did seem completely out of left field, I agree) 2. Shabriri’s lore to me is still fine. Shabriri was never the Flame of Frenzy itself. He’s just historically the first man to contact Frenzy through his despair. He essentially lives on as a malevolent spirit (ie possessing Yura) but he’s not the Lord of the Frenzied Flame. Midra’s story to me is 100% fine, he’s simply another man who, through an eternity of suffering, discovered the frenzied flame, it’s fine Shabriri isn’t mentioned.

I have a theory about Messmer being cursed by the Gloam-eyed Queen and this could explain a lot, im not very good to present it, but here we go. We learn that the omen twins where most likely cursed by the hornsent Grandam and that Malenia was cursed by Romina(Miquella could fit here because his curse is still some sort of stagnation), even Radagon is implied that he is cursed with red hair by the Fire Giants, but what if Melina and Messmer were cursed by GEQ? Messmer is born with the Abyssal serpent and he also has visions of fire, GEQ and her Godskins are associated with serpents(Godskin Apostles stretch their body and the Noble has a serpentine tail) and flames. Melina also has visions of fire and she appears to have powers similar to GEQ sealed in her eye(like Messmer has the Abyssal Serpent in his eye). GEQ is said that she had the Rune of Death, but for Marika to pluck it out of the Elden Ring and seal it, means that Rune of Death was part of the Elden Ring to begin with, so it isnt a stretch to say that GEQ had possessed the entire Elden Ring. This makes it easy to assume that she was the God before Marika. In the trailer we see Marika, but to me when she stands before the Divinity Gate, she looks more masculine and without a top, which could represent that it was actually Radagon. The seduction and betrayal could be Marika as Radagon seducing and betraying GEQ, taking the Elden Ring from some serpentine creature of her(or maybe her true form). This could also tie in Placidussax waiting for his god, aka GEQ, that fled before the age of the Erdtree and finally explain the reason why the Ancient Dragons attacked the capital.

I also see you having to remove your armor as being symbolic. Vyke failed to become the lord of anything, much less of frenzy. He inherited frenzy flame (maybe imperfectly) to save his maiden. But the lord of frenzy must divest themselves of everything, devoting themselves almost ascetically to the destruction of all (lack of clothes on midra and in the FF ending). Vyke still had an attachment in his maiden and in proper lordship--he hadn't divested himself of everything.

These are some of the best podcasts youve done!! I love them! This might not really count as a question so ignore if you like but: I was wondering how you guys felt about how lore changes between souls games? In my opinion, subsequent games in the series have taken things in strange directions and complicated things that were quite simple. But ive also seen people argue that it just explains and expands what was already there. I think the dark soul is a good example of this, but wondered what you thought! :)

Honestly this DLC has caused a great existential crises within me, I HATE it. I truly hate it. I'm not a fan of the game in the base game, it plays too much like a modern video game and I don't enjoy it, but the lore, god the lore, I've watched/listened/read thousands upon thousands of words on the lore, for me the game is a 7/10 but the lore is 10/10 Bloodborne level stuff. This DLC though, it's completely killed that, it's less that there are few concrete answers to questions in the base game, it's that it's so separate that it loses its connection to that lore. For me it's brought the entire experience down, in fact I rate this at a 5/10 at most. I've never felt this disappointed in a game, it's reach in the base game was so epic, truly epic, and the DLC brought that hand back. It answers nothing, it gives us nothing and will never be expanded on. This has been a hopelessly distructive experience.
